Laid down bass and drums for some new tracks we are working on with John Robinson of Clique Productions, based in North London, this week. The studio in Tottenham just about fitted in GreG’s mammoth drum kit, decked out with multitudes of cymbals. Dan Spiller of Shoot the Dog productions played a bit of guitar for us too. Vocals and guitars to be laid down over December – watch this space.

We had the pleasure of working with Junk Scientist of Larrikin Love, The Rakes and Imperial Leisure fame. The bulk of the recording was done at Brighton Electric and it was the best experience I’ve ever had in a studio. Matt and I ended up playing the vintage Selmer and Orange Rocker 30 amps which were amazing and had an awesome sound. GreG ended up playing the Hammond Organ spontaneously, and the terror on his face turned to sheer joy (he thought he was only in the studio to take pics that day!!) as he got into it. At the end of long, manic but wonderfully fun 3 days we recorded ‘Out of Control’, ‘Nobody’s Fool’ ‘Undercover’ and ‘Mine to Keep’, Undercover and Mine to Keep being brand new songs. Recording is a whole other world with accuracy essential in the studio and lots of room to be creative and improve. Russ made it really fun for us and worked with us to create the sound we wanted and we had an ‘electric’ experience! Fistful of FandangoTuesday, September 15th, 2009Attended ‘A Fistful of Fandango’ at 229 tonight – the first time I’ve been to the upper part of the big venue – Goldheart Assembly and headliners Pete and the Pirates were highlights. I love the folk-rock harmonies of the Goldheart boys and they will be releasing an album through Fierce Panda very soon. Apart from that we have been in rehearsals, songwriting mode and pre-production with our producer for the upcoming recordings– more details next blog. Producers and RecordingSaturday, August 8th, 2009Searching high and low for suitable producers for the past few weeks – I feel we are ready to record our songs with a quality producer/s over the next couple of months and it has been cool this month to work on new songs and arrangements for both recording and live gigs, with the boys. I think the most important thing about the producer has to be that they really understand us and the music and don’t try and mould it to their vision, but instead work with us, listen to us and that we work together to create music that we all love. This is the advantage of not being tied to a big label at the moment and having complete freedom to choose the producers that we want to work with. It will be great to work in a proper studio, with great equipment and work on the songs in pre-production with the producers. I’m so excited as now we are getting to where we want to be – now to write those songs Holiday SeasonSaturday, August 1st, 2009It’s the end of July/August and I’m starting to get the out of office e-mail replies and suddenly everything is slower as everyone goes on holiday. Of course there are the Ashes to look forward to if it doesn’t get rained out and sometime mid-August football season will start again. Then there are the festivals – V and Leeds/Reading at the end of August and lots of little festivals en route. No holiday for me this year – my trip across USA gets delayed for another decade – but I’m pretty sure it will be next year. We are also only playing a couple of gigs this month as we get ready to record in September and October exciting for us. It is always hard to turn down gigs for me but I really want us to release our record end of this year/early next year. We have been recording our rehearsals in anticipation. In other news, we met Chris from Waxdolly at our Cavendish Arms gig which he videotaped in June and this month he will put on his show as his featured artist – (date of show 08/08/09). Later this year, we will go along to the studios for an exclusive interview and acoustic session (look out for a similar deal with Propaganda Radio). SongwritingFriday, May 22nd, 2009It was London Songwriter’s week this week organised by BACS and I went along to the talk and performance by Sacha Skarbek. He was a charming and self-effacing guy – despite his amazing talent – he pretty much co-wrote most of James Blunt’s hit album and has loads of hits under his belt,by artists such as Adele and Jason Mraz. It was interesting as he was a classically trained pianist and then found his calling by escaping that existence coming to London and writing songs for people. In my opinion he also had a great voice better than some of the people he has written for! His passion came out and he did say before James Blunt’s album made it big – he was broke and on the point of giving up due to the lack of success – but he didn’t give up thankfully and that is a lesson for us all – NEVER GIVE UP – you just do not know what is around the corner… Haverstock Arms pics with new bassist Roger Millington below. Songs, Songs, SongsWednesday, April 16th, 2008Due in part to the weather I have been indoors a lot more, taking in the charms of the four walls and a ceiling, going to the studio and writing songs( as well as the endless house moving). I recorded a few songs at Exostudios and Fluke productions. It is amazing listening to the songs come to life and how they can sound very different to the baby you created in the bedroom (hmm). I have also been listening to more songs in terms of production, I’m so used to listening to the vocals, lyrics and guitar sometimes I forget there’s loads more going on in songs. I can’t wait to go into the studio later on this year and record a proper album. Before that though festival season is almost upon us with all the big festival announcing their line-ups. Glasto or V, T in the Park or Guilfest. If I could I’d go to them all, even better would be to play at them all! Here you can listen to one of the tracks that I recorded at The Premises out-of-control. Other tracks can be found on my website. At the moment I have one festival slot lined up and I am gunning to do loads more so see you round the campfire flower children and metalheads. New BeginningsThursday, March 6th, 2008As spring desperately grapples with winter for control, I find myself in an unusual place. I am moving house in London and my old home in Bradford is being sold. That is a lot of spring cleaning. I think moving is like watching your life flash before your eyes. Little memories that you’d forgotten, old phone numbers and addresses of people you used to be close to and now no longer know. It’s so strange looking at old school books and photos and thinking about where you were and where you ended up. On a lighter note I have got my new computer after a long time and now I can’t wait to do lots of songwriting on it!! The website is also coming together. So many possibilities so little time. I have also included a photo of my first guitar as I am in this nostalgic mood. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
